Learning Gemology at FEGRI
What is the Far East Gem Research Institute (FEGRI)?
FEGRI is Singapore’s independent gem research institute, education centre, and testing laboratory. Founded in 1988 and based in Little India, FEGRI has trained over 1,000 students and is an accredited training centre of the Gemmological Association of Great Britain (GEM-A). For over 35 years, it has served jewellery professionals, collectors, and enthusiasts across Asia.
I’m completely new to gemology. Where should I start?
The best starting point is the Foundation Certificate in Gemmology (GEM-A). This is an entry-level, internationally recognised qualification designed for those beginning their formal gemological journey. No prior experience is required — just a curiosity about gems and a willingness to learn to observe them scientifically.
What is the Foundation Certificate in Gemmology, and what will I learn?
The Foundation Certificate is offered by GEM-A (the Gemmological Association of Great Britain) and taught at FEGRI as an accredited training centre. It covers the fundamental science of gemstones — how they are formed, identified, and evaluated — including optical properties, the use of instruments like the loupe and refractometer, and an introduction to gem treatments. Upon passing, you receive an internationally recognised qualification from one of the world’s most respected gemological bodies.
When are the Foundation Certificate exams held?

What comes after the Foundation Certificate? What is the FGA?
After completing the Foundation Certificate, you can pursue the FGA (Fellow of the Gemmological Association) — the gold standard professional qualification in gemology, awarded by GEM-A. The FGA is recognised worldwide and opens doors in the jewellery trade, gem dealing, auction houses, laboratories, and more. FEGRI guides students through this advanced qualification with instructors who are themselves practising gemologists.
Is FEGRI the only place in Singapore where I can study for a GEM-A qualification?
Yes. FEGRI is the only GEM-A Accredited Teaching Centre in Singapore, as listed on the official GEM-A website (gem-a.com). If you want to earn the internationally recognised Foundation Certificate or FGA qualification through face-to-face tuition in Singapore, FEGRI is your only option.
Why should I study gemology at FEGRI rather than elsewhere?
FEGRI is Singapore’s only GEM-A accredited training centre, meaning your qualification is internationally recognised. Is a gemology qualification useful if I’m not planning to work in the jewellery trade?
Absolutely. Collectors, investors, antique enthusiasts, travel and cultural researchers, and anyone who regularly buys gems or jewellery benefit enormously from formal gemological knowledge. Being able to identify treatments, understand value factors, and read gem reports independently gives you confidence and protects you from costly mistakes.
What is the difference between the in-house courses and the GEM-A accredited courses?
FEGRI offers two types of courses. The in-house fundamental courses — such as Gems & Gemmology (Foundation) and Jade Identification — are full-day intensive workshops (SGD $580 nett + $38 registration) that award a Certificate of Attendance. They are ideal for enthusiasts or those wanting a taster before committing to a full qualification. The GEM-A accredited courses — the Foundation Certificate and the FGA — are formal academic qualifications with written exams set and marked by GEM-A in the UK, carrying global recognition, and are the right choice for anyone serious about a professional gemology career.

How much does the Foundation Certificate or FGA course cost?
Tuition fees for the GEM-A accredited courses are provided upon enquiry, as they depend on the course structure and sitting schedule. Please contact us at info@gem.com.sg for a full fee breakdown including tuition and GEM-A exam registration fees.
Where are classes held?
All courses are held at FEGRI’s premises at 9 Perak Road, Little India, Singapore 208130. The institute is a short walk from Rochor MRT Station (Downtown Line, Exit B). Street parking is available along Perak Road.
What languages are courses taught in?
Courses are taught in English, in line with GEM-A’s international standards.
Can I visit the institute before enrolling?
Yes — we welcome prospective students to visit. FEGRI is open Monday to Friday, 10am to 4pm, and is closed on weekends and public holidays. You can also explore the adjacent Gem Museum Singapore, the only dedicated gem museum in Singapore, to get a feel for the world of gemology before committing to a course.
